Award Recipients
Outstanding Alumnus Award
Given to an °®¶¹´«Ã½ alumnus who has excelled in their profession and made meaningful contributions to their community and the College.
Awarded to: Leah Mitchell, °®¶¹´«Ã½ Class of 2005
Leah Mitchell has been a Paramedic for 20 years and is a recognized leader in Maine’s Emergency Medical Services profession. She has served at agencies across the state, been a long-standing member of the state EMS education committee, and directed programs at two MCCS training centers. In her current role, she oversees education, training, and quality improvement for Maine’s largest EMS agency, impacting nearly 300 providers and patients across Maine and into New Hampshire. Leah also advocates for EMS education within the MaineHealth system, ensuring access to clinical opportunities for °®¶¹´«Ã½ students. A standout graduate of the College’s EMS program, she exemplifies the dedication to service that °®¶¹´«Ã½ strives to promote.
Outstanding Faculty Award
Given to an °®¶¹´«Ã½ faculty member who exceeds expectations while promoting the College’s mission to both the internal and external community.
Awarded to: Kevin Sweeney, °®¶¹´«Ã½ English Department Chair
Kevin Sweeney is °®¶¹´«Ã½â€™s longest-tenured faculty member, beginning his career in 1983 when the College was Southern Maine Vocational Technical Institute. Then offering just three English courses, the department now has well over 100 sections spanning composition, oral communication, literature, theater, poetry, and more—many of which Kevin still teaches. A steadfast supporter of the College, he has long fostered strong relationships across campus and was a respected union rep throughout the Maine Community College System. Known as the guardian of Poetry Month, a champion of local writers, and the former owner of Rudy, the beloved campus cat, Kevin is above all an enthusiastic teacher. He engages students with patience and respect, guiding those pursuing further education or new careers. He loves our students—and they love him right back.
Outstanding Staff Award
Given to an °®¶¹´«Ã½ staff member who exceeds expectations while promoting the College’s mission to both the internal and external community. This year, we have co-winners.
Awarded to: AJ Burton, Staff Advisor and Men’s Basketball Assistant Coach
Since joining °®¶¹´«Ã½ in 2016, AJ has been an integral part of the College community. He advises students within the Business and Hospitality pathway while also supporting student-athletes to ensure they receive the help and information they need. Known for stepping up in challenging times, AJ makes sure that all students—not just those on his roster—are taken care of. His commitment to student success and the many roles he plays make him a vital member of the °®¶¹´«Ã½ family.
Awarded to: Kalena Brady, Health Sciences Pathway Advisor
Kalena has gone above and beyond to support students through one of the most challenging times in °®¶¹´«Ã½â€™s history. Originally brought in as a Free College pathway advisor, she continued to devote countless hours to helping students navigate registration and program processes, even while facing job uncertainty. Known for her positive energy, Kalena brings laughter and encouragement into the office and remains a source of support for both students and colleagues. Her dedication exemplifies the student-first mission of °®¶¹´«Ã½.
Outstanding Business Award
Given to a business or organization that has made a significant impact through its support of °®¶¹´«Ã½ and the broader business community.
Awarded to: Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza, Represented by Jane and Bob Humphrey
Under Jane Humphrey’s leadership, the Casco Bay Bluefin Bonanza has become a highly successful fundraising event supporting MCCS campuses, with °®¶¹´«Ã½ as the largest beneficiary. Jane also established an endowed scholarship at °®¶¹´«Ã½ in memory of Lindsey Withers, ensuring lasting impact for future students. A champion for °®¶¹´«Ã½, her dedication and advocacy have strengthened opportunities for students and highlighted the importance of community support for higher education.
President’s Award
Given to an individual or individuals who have demonstrated exceptional dedication and service to the college.
Awarded to: Althea Puffer, °®¶¹´«Ã½ Facilities
Althea’s journey to and through °®¶¹´«Ã½ is a powerful story of resilience, determination, and hard work. She began as a student balancing her studies while working tough jobs in the Facilities Department, always with a smile. Before graduating, she earned a full-time role with Facilities, where she continues to bring the same grit, positivity, and dedication that defined her student years. Althea is a student, an alumna, and now a valued employee—her success reflects both her own resolve and the support of the Facilities team that encouraged her every step of the way.
